Three subspecies recognized:
- L. c. caudata in the mountains of northern Luzon (northern Philippines)
- L. c. malindangensis on Mount Malindang on northwestern Mindanao (southern Philippines)
- L. c. unicolor on Mount Apo on Mindanao (southern Philippines)
Formerly placed in genus Bradypterus by Gill and Donsker.
