Identification
13–14 cm (5-5½ in)
- Iridescent green forehead and crown
- Black face, neck and upperparts
- Violet rump
Female duller; greyish-brown upperparts and whitish underparts
Distribution
North-eastern Africa, North-East of Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan, southern and south-eastern Ethiopia and Somalia.
Taxonomy
This is one of the seven Sunbirds that have recently been moved into the genus Chalcomitra from the genus Nectarinia.
Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]
- C. h. hunteri:
- C. h. siccata:
- South Ethiopia to north-eastern Kenya and plateau region of Somalia
Habitat
Open woodland, semi-arid grassland and scrubby areas. They also visit gardens. Occurs at heights up to 1500 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Their diet consists of insects, fruit pulp and nectar.
Breeding
The globular nest is built by the female.
