Identification
12·5–14 cm (5-5½ in); A medium-sized wren
- White supercilium
- Black and white flecked face and neck
- Rufous crown and upper back
Distribution
Endemic to western Mexico, from Sonora south to Oaxaca.
Taxonomy
Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus with all other species of the genus Pheugopedius.
Subspecies
Five subspecies are recognized[1]:
- P. f. sonorae:#
- Pacific slope of north-western Mexico (southern Sonora to northern Sinaloa)
- P. f. pallidus:
- West Mexico (central Sinaloa and western Durango to Jalisco and Michoacán)
- P. f. felix :
- Mexico (south-eastern Jalisco to Michoacán, Guerrero and western Oaxaca)
- P. f. grandis:
- South Mexico (upper Río Balsas drainage to south-western Puebla, northern Guerrero)
- P. f. lawrencii:
- Tres Marías Islands (San Juanito, María Madre, María Magdalena, and María Cleofas), off the coast of Nayarit, western Mexico
Habitat
Fairly common resident of second-growth and forest edges.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of invertebrates, taking items such as beetles, caterpillars and bugs. They also eat some green plant material.
