Identification

17cm.

  • Medium grey head, throat and chest forming a hood
  • Yellowish-olive upperparts, wings and tail
  • Clear yellow rest of underparts
  • Pinkish bill and legs, dusky in chrysogaster

Sexes similar, juvenile undescribed.

Distribution

In the Andes of Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia.
Uncommon to fairly common in its range.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies recognized[1]:

  • C. r. rubrirostris in the Andes of Venezuela (southern Tachira), Colombia and northwest and east Ecuador
  • C. r. chrysogaster in the Andes of northwest and east Peru and western Bolivia (has been considered a separate species)

Habitat

Humid and wet montane forest.
Occurs mostly at 2100 to 3000m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds mostly on arthropods and some seeds.
Usually in pairs or small groups following mixed-species flocks. Forages usually rather high in the canopy.

Breeding

Birds in breeding condition recorded from July to August. Not much information about breeding.

Movements

A resident species.
