Areas of Interest
International tourists arrive mostly with plane on airport Tountota 40 km awy from Noumea. Just 1 km away is a supermarket ( credit cards not excepted ). 25 km in direction of Noumea is big supermarket Carrefour ( credit cards excepted ). It is near pay station of the highway, ask there. From Carrefour is the street to Mont Koghi and also to Yate ( also parc Riviere Bleue ).
5 km to north behind the bridge starts 40 km road to mine. From the mine starts walking trek to mount Humboldt ( Botanical Reserve du Mont Humboldt ).
Some kilomter in direction of Noumea is Mont Mou. At the highest point of the street is a small turn to a sanatory. From the sanatory back cross over small river, is a small parking place. Few meters down starts a steep walking trek ( only few meters steep ) to the top of Mont Mou.
Near Noumea is Mont Koghi a mountain rainforest. Stay overnight is possible in Auberge or in huts in the forest ( ask in Auberge ).
In Noumea is parc Forestier, where is possible to see domestic animals like Kagu, Ouvea paraket and gecko Rhacodactylus. Also to seen is a lot of native plants ( 76 % of New Caledonian plants are endemic ). open 10:15 am to 5:45 pm except monday closed 5 pm from 1 May to 31 August tel. 27 89 51
From Noumea to Yate over the island is the way to parc Riviere Bleue. For entry permit is needed. I got this on entry. 12/2004 camping was not allowed, because the Hurrican, which hit the island before.
1,45 h ( 100 km from Noumea ) drive into north from airport is Sarramea where is nice forest at Mont Dogny.
In the north east is mont Paine. For this area a permit is needed before.
Access and Facilities
New Caledonia is the second most expensive area in Southsea ( Polynesia is the first ). All costs are extremely high except french wine. But there are a lot of possibilities for camping.
From centrel place look to the hill. On the hill is a backpacker. This is very quite ( lot of rooms, so good chance for Your on room ).
