Identification

- Bright green
- Blue outer wing
- Greenish-blue upper part of the tail; the lower is maroon
- Blue-black crown
- Black beak, grey tipped

The collar on immatures is red
Distribution
South America: found from north-eastern Bolivia to Paraguay, south-western Brazil and northern Argentina.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1], which in the past has been placed in genus Ara.
Habitat
Rainforest, swamps, dry savanna and the foothills of mountains.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes fruits, nuts, seeds, green plant material and some insects.
Breeding
They nest in hollows in trees. The clutch of 3-5 eggs is incubated for 26 days.
