Tyto javanica

Tyto delicatula

Identification

Distribution

From India and south east Asia through Lesser Sundas (Indonesia) to New Guinea, Australia, Solomon Islands, Samoa and Vanuatu.

Taxonomy

One of three species formerly considered one under the name of Barn Owl.

Andaman Masked Owl has been split from this species. In contrast, some taxa seem close to Eastern Barn Owl: for example Taliabu Masked Owl and Sulawesi Masked Owl (reference [5])

The scientific name for this part of the former Barn Owl used to be Tyto delicatula, but Tyto javanica was deemed to be an older applicable name and that is therefore the scientific name for this species.

Subspecies

Clements recognizes these subspecies[1]:

The last four subspecies has also been proposed to be a full species different from all other Barn Owl relatives using the name Australian Barn Owl.
