Dusky Broadbill - BirdForum Opus

Corydon sumatranus

Identification

Size-28cm
Large and sluggish with blackish plumage. Broad pinkish bill and orbital skin together with buff throat and subterminal tail band of white spots diagnostic. Broad white bar at primaries conspicuous in flight. Yellow-orange streak on back usually inconspicous at rest but shows well in flight.
Juvenile - bill paler,throat blackish, lacks streak on back.

Distribution

Tenasserim (Myanmar) and Indochina, through the Malay Peninsula to Sumatra and Borneo.
An uncommon species, apparently decreasing and disappearing in parts of its range due to logging of forest and habitat loss.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 4 subspecies[1]:

  • North-west Borneo (Sarawak) and North Natuna Islands
  • C. s. orientalis:

Habitat

Forests. Frequents the canopy and middle storey.
Occurs in the lowlands and hills, up to 1220m in Burma, 2000m in Indochina.

Behaviour

Usually in small noisy groups up to ten, even at nests. Sometimes solitary.

Diet

Feeds on insects, takes also small lizards.

Breeding

A co-operative breeder with up to 10 birds at a single nest. The nest is a large, bulky pear-shaped structure made of twigs, small roots, epiphyte strands, bamboo leaves, dry moss and other plant material. Lays 2 - 4 eggs.
A resident species.

Vocalisation

Voice - A cadence of shrill thin notes, ki-ii-ki-ii,ki-ii raising inflection. Also a shrill pseeeo on a descending tone.
