Ochetorhynchus melanurus

Chilia melanura[2][3]

Identification

Bill is short, black with pale inner half of lower mandible, and slightly upturned. Eye-brow narrow and short, behind and above eye. Relatively dark overall but with white throat. Rear of body bright rufous, as is the inner half of the tail, contrasting to dark outer half.

Similar species

Band-tailed Earthcreeper is an overall much paler bird with a different pattern on the tail.

Distribution

South America: found only in Chile.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Two subspecies are recognized[1]:

  • O. m. atacamae:
  • Mountains of north-central Chile (Atacama and Coquimbo)
  • O. m. melanurus:
  • Mountains of central Chile (south to Colchagua)

Habitat

Semi-desert scrub and boulder fields at high altitude - observed at heights around 1800 m.

Behaviour

A very nervous bird.
