Identification
Distribution
Found in the Pacific on Fiji, the Cook Islands, Banks Islands and northern Vanuatu.
Taxonomy
Formerly considered conspecific with Gould's Petrel.
Subspecies
- P. l. leucoptera:
- Breeds Cabbage Tree Island (off eastern Australia); ranges southern Pacific Ocean
- P. b. magnificens:
- Banks Islands and northern Vanuatu
- P. b. brevipes:
- Fiji and Cook Islands
Habitat
Breeds near the coast usually on islands, spends the rest of its time at sea, but the Magnificent Petrel seems specialized in coastal feeding.
Behaviour
Breeding displays seems to involved birds calling from the ground at night as well as nightly display flights over breeding areas.
