- Hemixos cinereus
Identification
Short dark crest lightly mottled ashy. Blackish lores and malar and white throat contrasting with pale greyish-brown breast. Belly and undertail coverts whitish (the latter yellow in subspecies connectens from Borneo). Upperparts brownish-grey. Subspecies connectens have wings with a yellowish-green patch, but this lacking in race cinereous.
Similar species
More evenly brown than in the related Ashy Bulbul.
Distribution
Asia: Found from southern Thailand, Malay Peninsula, Borneo and Sumatra.
Taxonomy
Two subspecies are recognized[1].
- H. c. cinereus - Thai-Malay Peninsula (north to southern Surat Thani) and Sumatra
- H. c. connectens - Highlands of northern Borneo
Recently split from Ashy Bulbul
Habitat
May utilize lowland but is more common in montane evergreen areas, both primary and second-growth.
Behaviour
Feeds on fruit, berries, seeds and insects.
Vocalisation
Whistles that vary from sharp through ringing and whining sounds.
