Taxonomy
Sometimes placed in genus Rallicula.
Subspecies[1]
There are 3 subspecies:
- R. r. rubra:
- Arfak Mountains of western New Guinea
- R. r. klossi:
- New Guinea (Weyland Mountains to Oranje Mountains)
- R. r. telefolminensis:
- Eastern New Guinea (Victor Emanuel and Hindenberg mountains)
An additional subspecies subrubra is generally considered invalid[2].
Habitat
High montane forests.
Behaviour
A large globe or dome shaped nest is built from leaves, moss and ferns, in a pandanus palm crown. The single large egg is incubated by both sexes for 34-37 days.
