Identification

30cm. Sexes similar

  • Head bright red
  • Shoulders dark red
  • Mantle either red or red with a yellow patch (depending on subspecies)
  • Wings green
  • Wing bend and under wing coverts yellow
  • Tail red with green tip
  • Belly orange
  • Cere grey
  • Iris orange-red
  • Bill orange
  • Feet grey

Juvenile: Bill and iris dark

Distribution

South-east Asia: found in North Maluku, Indonesia.

Taxonomy

Subspecies[1]

There are 3 subspecies:

  • L. g. morotaianus:
  • L. g. garrulus:
  • Northern Moluccas (Halmahera, Widi and Ternate)
  • L. g. flavopalliatus:
  • Northern Moluccas (Kasiruta, Bacan, Obi and Mandiole)

Habitat

Mangrove forests.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes nectar, insects, buds and seeds.

Breeding

They nests in hole in tall trees; 2 eggs are laid.
