South America: found in Brazil.



There are 2 subspecies[1]:

  • H. o. obsoletus:
  • Mountains of south-eastern Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo)
  • H. o. zimmeri:
  • Mountains of south-eastern Brazil (Paraná and Rio Grande do Sul)


Atlantic Rain Forest with stands of bamboo.



Their main diet consists of insects, which they forage for in bamboo thickets, generally around 1-3 m from the ground.


They construct a globular ball nest about 17.5cm high and 16cm wide. It has a domed roof.
