Often shows a well developed white eye-ring
Distribution
Southeast Asia: Indonesia
Australasia: Papua New Guinea, Saint Matthias Islands, Melanesia, and the Solomon Islands.
Taxonomy
Subspecies[1]
There are 7 subspecies:
- A. b. beccarii:
- Mountains of New Guinea
- A. b. johannae:
- Karkar Island (off eastern New Guinea) and Bismarck Archipelago (except for the Admiralty and St. Matthias groups)
- A. b. eichhorni:
- St. Matthias Islands (Mussau and Emira)
- A. b. admiralitatis:
- Manus Island (Admiralty Islands)
- A. b. masculinus:
- Nissan Island (western Solomon Islands)
- A. b. intermedius:
- Western Solomon Islands (Bougainville, Gizo and New Georgia Group)
- A. b. solomonensis:
- Eastern Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal, Makira, Santa Ana, Rennell)
Formerly placed in genus Gallicolumba by Clements.
Habitat
Moist montanes and forests.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes seeds.
