Identification
Male 65–70 cm (25½-27½ in); female 56–57 cm (22-22½ in)
Male
- Dark crest
- Blue black upperside, wings and breast
- Chestnut lower breast and belly
- Chestnut-orange lower back
- Black outer tail feathers
- Buffy central tail feathers
- Blue facial skin, enlarged as wattles
- Red iris
Female
- Short chestnut crest
- Blue facial skin
- Chestnut plumage on upperside and especially fore-end of underside
- White streaks on breast giving way to a scalloped white and black lower belly
Similar species
Compare Bulwer's Pheasant (notice white tail in male) and Bornean Crestless Fireback (notice red facial skin).
Distribution
South-east Asia: found in Borneo.
Taxonomy
This was formerly joined with Malayan Crested Fireback in Crested Fireback (Pheasant).
Subspecies
There are 2 recognized subspecies[1]:
- L. i. ignita:
- Kalimantan (Borneo) and Banka Island (off south-eastern Sumatra)
- L. i. nobilis:
- Borneo (Sarawak and Sabah)
Habitat
Lowland forests.
Behaviour
Diet
It is known that they eat leaves and seeds and some insects, but there is little detailed information available.
Breeding
The clutch consists of 4-8 creamy-white eggs.
