Six subspecies are recognized:[1]

  • E. m. waigeuense
  • Waigeo Island (New Guinea)
  • E. m. tommasonis
  • Yapen Island (New Guinea)
  • E. m. melas
  • Salawati Island and western New Guinea
  • E. m. meeki
  • Eastern New Guinea
  • E. m. goodsoni
  • Aru Islands (New Guinea)
  • E. m. batantae
  • Batanta Island (New Guinea)

Formerly placed in the genus Coracina.
Some resources have incorrectly given scientific name as Edolisoma melan
