Identification

13–15 cm (5-6 in)

  • White supercilium
  • White patch beneath eye
  • Black crown, head sides, upperparts and tail

Distribution

Asia and Australasia:
Southeast Asia: Indonesia, Papuan Islands
Australasia: Island of New Guinea, Papua New Guinea, Melanesia

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • P. h. steini:
  • P. h. hypoleuca:
  • Western New Guinea to Port Moresby area and west Papuan islands
  • P. h. hermani:
  • Northern New Guinea (Mamberamo River to upper Watut River)

Habitat

Rainforests and local secondary forests.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consist of insects, gleaned in the understorey, occasionally up to 15 m above ground.
