Identification
Size 20 - 24cm (7¾-9½)
Blackish upperparts, narrow white streak on wings, reddish maroon rump, black breast band separating reddish maroon throat patch and underparts together with blue maxilla and yellow mandible diagnostic.
Juvenile -Throat and breast grey-brown. From juvenile Banded Broadbill by lack of yellow on upperparts.
Distribution
Myanmar and southern Indochina through Malay Peninsula to Sumatra, Bangka, Belitung and Borneo.
Formerly common to abundant but population has declined considerably suffering from lowland deforestation. Still occurs in several protected areas in its range.
Taxonomy
Subspecies affinis may be split as "Arakan Black-and-red Broadbill", C. affinis due to plumage differences and smaller size.
Subspecies
Clements recognises the following subspecies [1]:
- C. m. affinis: "Arakan Black-and-red Broadbill" Southwest Myanmar
- C. m. siamensis: Southern Myanmar, southern Thailand, Cambodia, southern Laos and southern Vietnam [possibly inseparable from malaccensis]
- C. m. malaccensis: Extreme southern Thailand and Malay Peninsula
- C. m. macrorhynchos:Sumatra, Borneo, Bangka, Belitung and Palau Laut
Habitat
Forests, forest edges, plantations and mangroves fringes. Confined to the lowlands (up to 300m) in most of its range, occurs up to 900m in Sumatra.
Behaviour
Frequents the middle and lower storeys, usually near water courses. Generally unobtrusive, perching quietly in dense foliage. Will also perch on low branches overlooking water. Shy.
Diet
Feeds mainly on insects but takes also some fruit and other vegetable matter.
Diet
Nests are constructed mostly on branches overhanging water. Lays 2 - 3 eggs.
Movements
A resident species.
Vocalisation
Voice - Short and coarse grating notes similar to cicades. Also a brief rising trill like Black-and-yellow Broadbill but shorter and softer.
