Southeast Asia: found in Indonesia, Papuan Islands
Australasia: Island of New Guinea (endemic), Papua New Guinea, Melanesia (endemic)

There are 2 subspecies:
- P. p. pulchellus:
- West Papuan islands and New Guinea
- P. p. decorus:
- Northern New Guinea (east shore of Geelvink Bay to Astrolabe Bay)
A third subspecies bellus is not recognised by all authorities and is usually considered invalid[1]
