- Long, thin bill
- Long pink legs
- White head, neck and body contrast with black wings
- Broad deep chestnut breast band
Non-breeding adults have a less well-defined breast-band
Immatures lack the breast band altogether
Distribution
Southwestern and south-central Australia.

Inland salt lakes.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes a variety of small shellfish and vegetable matter.
Breeding
They breed on islets in inland salt lakes after rain, occasionally in other areas of bare, sandy soil. The nest is a ground scrape sometimes lined with dry vegetation.
