- Glaucidium nana
Identification
Brown, Grey, and Rufous morphs known (not all sources differentiate grey from brown). In all forms, this species has relatively small eyes and long tail with relatively many pale bars; birds from some areas have wider pale than dark bars.
Distribution
Western Argentina and central + south Chile. In Chile, the range does not overlap the similar Peruvian Pygmy Owl.
Taxonomy
Monotypic[1].
Has in the past been considered a part of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl but now separated based on both DNA evidence and differences in vocalizations other than song.
Habitat
Temperate forests and more open areas with groups of trees such as dry scrub and farmland. May even be able to nest in burrows in earthen banks that has been dug by other species and thereby be present completely without larger trees.
Behaviour
Active at night but also sometimes during the day.
