Back and wings heavily marked with brown streaks

Distribution

South-east Asia: found in Indochina, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Indonesia, Greater Sundas, Sumatra, Java

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 2 subspecies^[1]:

P. h. chryseus:

Southern Myanmar to central Thailand, Cambodia and southern Vietnam

P. h. hypoxanthus:

Sumatra and Java

Habitat

Wetlands, marshes, reed beds, arable land and rice fields

Behaviour

Breeding

They build a dome-shaped nests made from woven grass, in reeds or grasses beside fresh water lakes and ponds.

Diet

The diet consists mostly of grass seeds and grain. Insects are included during the nesting period.
