Identification
13-16 cm
Adult shows olive back, neck and wings, while breast, throat and belly is pale with streaks and spots. Head sports a yellow crown in which the slightly smaller male has a red spot in the centre.
Juveniles are similar to the adults but duller with a more barred underside. [1]

Hispaniola where most common in the east.

Habitat
Occurs in all kind of forests including mangrove from sea-level to 1800 m. In some areas limited to the local pine. [1]
Behaviour
Diet
The diet includes insects, particularly ants and beetles, and fruit.
Breeding
2-4 white eggs are laid in a nesting cavity which is normally excavated in a dead substrate. [1]
