The Alps are a mountain chain in central Europe, rising up to more than 4800m. The northern and southern slopes tend to be rather wet while the inner alpine valleys can be very dry. Birdlife varies with altitude and climate.
Several mountain chains worldwide have inherited the name Alps as well, eg. the Southern Alps in New Zealand.
