Tachybaptus rufolavatus

Identification

25 cm. Dark, oily blackish cap, and line down nape, pale cinnamon throat and ear-coverts, mottled dusky and rufous underparts, dark brown back, pale yellow iris, and variable pale gape-wattles, solid, blackish bill with white tip.

Distribution

Lake Alaotra, Madagascar. Last reported 1950, this species is labeled extinct by the 2010 Birdlife International red list. The likely cause of extinction was an invasive, carnivorous fish.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.

Habitat

Wetlands and lakes.

Behaviour

The diet includes fish.
