geedub's review
This review is for Opticron's 10x42 DBA model but I shouldn't think there would be any difference in quality between the 8x42's and these - only a difference in weight.
After 3 weeks of fairly heavy use in most types of weather and lighting conditions I can't really fault them! They perform excellently giving clear crisp images with no aberration, colour fringing or distortion worth mentioning. In low light they are superb and cope well with rain and drizzle, and having compared them with both Leica 10x42 BN and Zeiss Victory 10x40 models I challenge anyone to find a difference optically. Having said that, one man's meat is another man's poison and this review is subjective after all - what I think good may appear poor to others.
Weighing in at 800g (1lb 12oz) complete with strap and rainguard (679g without) I found them light enough to use with one hand when necessary and certainly light enough to carry around all day without a problem - the neoprene neckstrap supplied works well and doesn't feel like a cheesewire after a day in the field.
Focusing is smooth and precise with a close focus distance of under 7 feet (2.2m), taking two complete turns of the focus wheel to go from closest distance to infinity.
For spectacle wearers like myself the twist up/down eyecups are great - twist down with your specs on and you get a full field of view without any problems and twist up when without specs for an equally clear field of view (105m at 1000m incidentally) and the click stop dioptre adjustment on the right eyepiece works well too.
Criticisms? Well only that you need the hands and skills of a surgeon to attach the neckstrap to the binoculars and that the raincover for the eyepieces, being made of rubber rather than plastic, tended to stick a bit when putting them in place but these have now "bedded in" and are ok now. Minor niggles really and don't detract from what is plainly a very impressive piece of kit.
I can't recommend them highly enough and at the price (579) they are excellent!
Pros
- Superb optics at a reasonable price
Cons
- None

Like the previous reviewer I\'ve only used the 10x42.
The optics are good infact very good. The bins are lightweight and very comfy in the hand.
The only negatives are the field of view although these are comparable to the Nikon HG x42.
At this price its well worth considering.
Pros
- optically excellent
- lightweight
- good price.
Cons
- field of view limited compared to big names
- no snob value if this bothers you.
