Hi all,
I've already asked several time ID of Sporophila in Loma Merchán (Bucaramanga, Santander, Colombia). I consider this genus the most difficult in this place where I live since December 2024. Among the 250 species seen here, 35 are Thaupidae. All these seedeaters are confirmed, recently I even found the Sooty Grassquit breeding.
Blue-black Grassquit, Ruddy-breasted Seedeater, Large-billed Seed-Finch, Thick-billed Seed-Finch, Grey Seedeater, Black-and-white Seedeater, Yellow-bellied Seedeater, Yellow-faced Grassquit, Black-faced Grassquit, Dull-coloured Grassquit & Sooty Grassquit.
I've images (videos and photos) of birds that might involve Chestnut-bellied Seed-Finch (pure or hybrid) that no one could confirm, thus this famous species in not yet in the list of Loma Merchán. It is recorded but very rare in Bucaramanga.
My question is simple : is this photo enough to confirm the species ? It appeared very dark above and clearly chestnut on the belly in the field. The photo is taken in the dark at a distance and the belly looks here more pinkish that it appeared in the field.
I still hope to do better but, if in 4 months here I didn't get a proper photo, I've not sure to come soon with a good shot.
Thanks
