Can't help thinking that this my be a bit of an own goal. In their enthusiasm to trumpet the success of the protection programme, they may be giving the Japaneses Whaling industry some ammunition to lobby to start hunting them again - legally.

Iceland took out about 120 Fin Whales and two Blue Whales this year---that is certainly not sustainable.
Japan and the Faroes are well known killers but Russia seems to get away with murder as far as whaling goes and the end of the link is usually China who's culture seems to be obsessed with ridiculous remedies that involve doing obscene things to endangered species to get 'Snake Oil' remedies!! They are now into Sea Life type entertainment so Orcas, Belugas and Dolphins are heading east in big numbers, sadly no petitions are likely to have any effect!

Hadn't realised that anyone could hunt Blue Whale legally?

Where does Russian Whale meat go, I'm not aware of any domestic market for it?

It is just a publication of the annual update of Red List, with Fin Whale picked as an example of species changing status.

Unfortunately the Red List appears to be going downhill recently. It uses criteria which are often meaningless, it changed the website to something very basic, and looks more like an advocacy, not objective information.

It is completely illegal to hunt Blue Whales so they said they were Hybrids with Fin Whales--total BS!
Sadly the EU, Whaling Commission etc did nothing!
