Has anybody tried Eye Shields? (1 Viewer)

They come with the new Nikon EDG but the wings are shorter than on the ones shown here and the base is longer. They are an option that comes with the EDG that you can use and remove at will but they can only be used with the eyecup in the down position. I think Nikon calls them "horned eye cups." I believe they also come with the Swarovski EL's. They work pretty good when the light is low behind you but sometimes a little light will sneak in if they aren't tight against your temples. If the light is behind you but at an angle you can also block it off by turning the bill of your baseball hat over in that direction; if you are wearing one.

Winged eyecups are often useful and I use them on both a Swaro. EL and SLC, they are
well designed and they even have the ocular cover that fits. They really help with backlighted
stray light situations. I find that I use mine but do switch back to the regular ones. With the Swaros. they replace the screwon eyecups, and so they are only used in one position, so that is for users without eyeglasses.
The Nikon EDG does have a horned eyecup which is slipped over the twistup, but I have tried them, and they do not fit my face, so I do not use them, Nikon needs to do better here.

The ones Dennis mentions are interesting, I too would be interested in comments.

I've cut similar contrivances from bicycle innertubes. They really do work well. Their only downside is that the incresed diameter usually makes the eyeguard either difficult or impossible to use. So, if these have a larger diameter eyeguard that would be nice. Those winged eyeguards look very similar to the eyecups of the Steiner Peregrine XP, which I think is one of the best features of that binocular. Eyeglass wearers probably will not find them of much use.

I'm going to get some simply because I have always thought some binocular accessory manufacturer was missing the boat by not offerring something like this. These things look like they it would be pretty easy to trim to fit. Kudos from me on the winged eyeshield |:d|.

I've got a pair on my SLC, and Gold Ring HD. They really do work as advertised. In fact, I was amazed at how much better the view got. Like Steve C said, using the eyeguard becomes an issue. All I did was adjust the winged eyecups down as far as they could go and still be usable. This allows the eyecups to be turned down, and the eyeguards work like they are supposed to.

I remember my first ever pair of binoculars from Dixons in the year dot. You could buy these to go on the binos then and were excellent. I had forgotten over the past 40 years how well they worked, will have to look at a set.

I sure would like to get my hands on a pair of winged eyeshields that are compatible with my glasses! I watched the video's in envy; if they're already such an improvement for people who don't wear glasses, I would think people who have to wear glasses will be even better off with a good pair.

I've tried contacts for a while, but got my cornea's damaged, so I'm forced to wear specs.
It would be great to have something to block out the stray light.

Regards,

Ronald

Steve:

I agree with you about Steiner and the winged eyecup they provide, I had
a pair of Nighhunters, and they work very well, and fold down when not needed.

I rate them very well.

Eyeglass wearers, winged eyecups may not work for you.

FWIW here is a link to their web page.

I have some doubts that the clarity improvement of the Mule Deer in the video is quite that dramatic, but then again, I'm not trying to sell any. Having said that the winged eye cup idea does work for me. However $19.99 seems a bit much for the things, but I ordered a pair of the standard size. Seems like with the ease the shield seems to attach, one shield set should work for multiple binoculars. Now for a larger diameter eye guard. I wonder if the Steiner Eye Guards for their XP will work?

Write a review on them after you have tried them especially your opinion on increased fogging and black out or ER problems with them if any. Thanks!

I find these things work remarkably well but, sadly, even the large size do not fit large eyepiece binoculars. Mine (the Large Version) are especially effective with fold down rubber eyecup models and greatly help my Zeiss 7 x 42 BGA Dialyts and Swaro 8 x 30 Habicht Classics. They do not fit (despite much tugging and pulling) Leica BA, Leupold Gold Ring or any of the Zen Ray ED or ED2 models.

My first try at posting pics.....hopefully it works.......

I'm really not sure what size they are. They're a little over 1" in diameter I'd guess.

JG:

From your pics, it looks like you gave them a stretch to get them on the
SLC's, is the rubber flexible enough? So maybe some others here can try that also.

Jerry

Yes Jerry, I did give them a slight stretch but it sure helps them stay in place very nicely. The real stretch will be putting the last one I have on my Kowa 884 eyepiece....it's big!

Has anybody tried those new Eye Shields and what did you think of them. They have them at Sportsmans Warehouse. Here is a link to some You Tube videos on them. I am cautious of any of those things on TV that all sell for $19.99!

I've used winged eye cups for astronomy for years. They can be very helpful in controlling intruding side-light in contrasty situations. If the Youtube videos are from someone involved with a retailer then I would treat them as another infomercial.
