The mulepack - Great tripod carrier! (2 Viewers)

Please can someone tell me if the mulepac can be worn with the tripod legs fully extended?

Also, is it completely universal with all tripods?

Thanks.

In theory it can but in reality it's not a good idea. The legs will catch on every little thing possible, they will get wedged as you try to enter the hide and you will look like a bit of a plonker. The salesman at Cley Spy advised me against it. I think it will fit just about any normal sized tripod but no doubt there will be something out there which is not suitable.

I sometimes use it with the legs semi-extended, it can be done depending on circumstances and you will learn when you can or should not practice it.

:eek!: But Andrew, you know I change my mind every three days, don´t you? The last thing in the world I´d recommend to anyone is my own recommendations. But I hope you like it anyway.

Don't worry no blame will be attached to you. I to am buying/swopping (even things i like) scopes / tripods even cameras to try and get my ideal solution and deep down i know i will never be happy.;)

Well done Cley Spy what a cracking piece of kit.
I am really pleased with my purchase. The carry is very comfortable with plenty of storage for extras (digi camera, fieldguide etc.)

Kevin I keep a regular Nikon camera strap on my ED50/Velbon UltraMaxi L combo. Since the scope is camo wrapped the friction of the tape keeps the strap from slipping off the barrel. The kit is actually so light I usually carry it in one hand, but when I need to be hands-free I can slip it on my shoulder. Being tall, I can leave the legs folded but still extended. Can't imagine anything the would be faster to deploy.

For my larger Kowa 883/BENRO Travel Angel, I am now thinking about these OP/TEC tripod straps.

cheers,
Rick

Thanks. It's the "freeing up of the hands" that's the trick. Perhaps the reason I least like carrying a tripod in the conventional manner on the shoulder.

I have a Wandering Tatler that does well but that's on the 190/128RC combo so I though the smaller tripod needs a cheaper strap from grab and go use!

SCOPAC - Simply the best

I have had and regularly used a Scopac since they came out many years ago now.
They are well made and tough as old boots and still look as new despite the use it has had.
What the 'Toggle' thing is you speak of, I just don't know.
As all the attachments are very substancial bits of kit.

NB.

I have just bought a Manfrotto 190CXE tripod and 701HDV head to replace my Opticron tripod. It is neat and quite light but I have discovered that it doesn't work with the Mulepack as well as the Opticron tripod. The top section of the legs is shorter than the sides of the Mulepack, so the bottom loops which go round the legs hang below the joint in the leg. This means that they do not support the weight of the tripod at all and the entire weight is taken on the straps around the column. The top column strap pulls the top of the Mulepack around the top of the tripod and it presses on the clips which control the angle of the legs. This means that the legs do not always lock in position. Finally, the buckle on the lower strap around the column ends up directly behind the free, back leg, preventing it from being pushed in fully.

None of the these problems is major but, if possible, it is worth trying the Mulepack on your tripod to make sure it will fit properly before purchasing it.

I notice some comments on the Mulepack's longevity earlier in the thread.

I've had mine since 29th January this year. It's been great, however the clips that connect it to the two tripod arms are beginning to distort and don't hold together as effectively as they used to. This can be fixed - I imagine, by simply gluing the clips together.

However, of more immediate concern is that the material on one of these is almost loose. Best illustrated by a picture (attached). I wonder, has anyone else experienced problem so soon into ownership? I have a sowing machine and so will attempt a patch-up job - but worry that it will never be as 'secure' as it was upon purchase. I don't suppose Cley will accept this as a faulty product after ten months use! But I am definitely disappointed that the thing hasn't even held together for a year.

That doesn't look good, Blue Alert, after only 10 months use. Mine has had heavy (at least once a week) use for 18 months and shows no sign of the stitching coming apart like your picture. The straps that hold onto the tripod legs are showing signs of wear but not unduly on mine. The Mulepack is expensive and I think I would email Cley Spy and tell them of your concern including the picture.

Good advice. Same thing happened to mine (after more than a year though). I've successfully repaired it with a sewing machine. In fact the first Mulepack CleySpy sent me fell apart when I set it up for the first time (swiftly replaced by the shop).

The standard Scopac is a much tougher product (I have one of those which has had much more wear and has no sign of damage).

Sean (no connection with Scopac!)
