Hi there
I hope to get to Walberswick at some point over the next week or so to have a go at photographing the Red Deer rut there. I have never been there before - has anyone got any tips about where to go, directions for good light, time etc.
Many thanks in advance

I don't know about Walberswick but RSPB Minsmere are having Red Deer rutting viewing sessions over the next two weekends. The viewing point is on Westleton Heath off the Westleton-Dunwich road. I can't find anything much about it on the RSPB website but I was given a leaflet last weekend. It takes place from late afternoon onwards so light might be an issue unless you have a bright lens. Sorry I can't be more helpful but you might be able to contact Minsmere for more information.

The RSPB watchpoint was clearly signposted off the A12 at Blythburgh last time I went past.

Thanks Stuart and NoSpringChicken.

Will have a look. I would imagine dawn may be a better time than afternoon?? What do you think? (Not photographed Red Deer rut before).

You might want to keep a pretty low profile if you have any intention of getting close. Shooting from near a climbable tree would be prudent.

Sorry late to this but I'd avoid Minsmere liviewing platform like the plague - millions of people and deer very distant. Red deer are amazingly common and just driving slowly around the area in late afternoon should enable you to see lots. I've also heard them rutting at Dunwich forest - and seen them there outside the rutting season - and I'm told this is a good area.

Suffolk Red Deer rut? Hmmm, one answer, nod nod wink wink. Heveningham Hall, the fields opposite, on the B1117, Halesworth side of the hall.
