Pileated Woodpecker (male)
Pileated Woodpecker (Dryocopus pileatus subsp. pileatus) Male, species sexually dimorphic. While visiting Buescher State Park in Bastrop County, near Smithville, Texas, USA this beauty flew straight towards my car about 3 m (10 ft) off the ground. He landed right behind me, I turned my car sideways and stuck my camera out of the window and started clicking (lol). He was going after the ripe Peppervine fruits (Ampelopsis arborea: Vitaceae). A great vine when flowering for bees, flies, wasps, and an occasional butterfly. Buescher State Park is in the Post Oak Savannah Vegetational Area and was dominated by oak, elm and hackberry. It ranges in elevation from ca. 32-99 m (106-325 ft) in elevation.

I will not post again until Tuesday. I have a few things that require my attention. Everyone have a great weekend!!!! Cheers!

Well at least your fingers will get a break also!! lol!! Lovely pecker shot Stanley!! tfs it!

I often turn my 4X4 sideways and photograph the birds through the open window. Birds tend to accept the car more than one stepping out of it. Super capture Stanley!!!
Dick.

I think he was just as excited about those fruits as you were at seeing him! Excellent, Stanley, I love the way you captured his expression.

A stunner! And the one woodpecker supposedly found in my California "patch" that I've yet to see. Thanks for sharing!

Super lighting, details, and eye catch, beautiful picture Stanley, Glad you got this one
