Coombe Abbey Reported on the Yahoo group on January 14th: Egyptian Goose with Greylags by duck feeding area at Coombe Abbey‏ (John Galletly). This appears to be a resident bird, as one has been recorded on the WeBS counts there regularly since 2011. It's a pity that very little news comes out...

A new bird book coming out soon may be of interest to local birders, as its recording area includes part of Warwickshire: http://www.nhbs.com/birds_of_the_heart_of_england_tefno_189917.html http://www.amazon.co.uk/Birds-Heart-England-1952-2011-Sixty/dp/1846318858

Hi Graham, The actual age of this Kittiwake was just a small point, and I suspect an unimportant one in the eyes of some, but hopefully more 2nd-year birds will be detected now that this has been mentioned. Btw, after further research I think the Shustoke bird might be better described as a...

Hi Graham, John, I guess this bird can be referred to as a 2nd-w, but Collins Bird Guide states that 2nd-year birds have winter head pattern during the summer as well. A quick search for 2nd-s birds revealed this taken in May with some grey still on the nape...

Just a small point on the Shustoke Kittiwake, it's a second-winter/summer bird, as already noticed by Dave Hutton. Check out the pic of it in flight showing the upperwing markings at http://seeswoodpool.blogspot.co.uk I think an adult would have summer head plumage by now too? Matt

Golden Plovers near Hockley Heath Near Hockley Heath early afternoon, I twitched 500+ Golden Plover in the sheep pasture along Cut Throat Lane in-between Arnold's Wood and Big Spring Coppice. Mike Inskip had a lot more there though when he first found them earlier today. This flock is more...

Ladywalk, 02/09/2012 Visited Ladywalk for the first time this afternoon, and whilst coming out of the Rudd Hide found an adult male Redstart in scrub on the opposite side of the river there. Also 2 Goosander flew over. The amount of Himalayan Balsam on the reserve is quite alarming. Matt

When trying to establish the origin of the Earlswood bird last year, apart from Twycross I could only find two other local zoos that had Night Herons, namely Cotswold Wildlife Park and Blackbrook Zoo, the latter of which is rumoured to have had birds of other species escape last year. I don't...
