Identification

Length 58-65 cm, mass 565-941 g; males larger than females.

Similar Species

Similar to Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, but smaller, and with a reduced, dark casque on top of the dark bill.

Distribution

Africa: found from Democratic Republic of Congo and Kenya in the north to eastern South Africa in the south.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Sometimes included in Ceratogymna.

Lowland, coastal and riverine evergreen forests.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes fruits and large insects.

Breeding

The female seals herself into the nest whilst incubating the clutch of 4-5 white eggs.
