Identification
75 to 80 cm
- Black plumage
- Large creamy casque (smaller in females)
- Silver-grey head
- Broad white stripe along the back.
Distribution
Africa:
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi
Southern Africa: Zimbabwe, South Africa
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
It is sometimes included in the genus Ceratogymna.
Habitat
Open bushland, moist evergreen, riparian forest and large gardens.
Occurs up to 2600m.
Behaviour
May be found roosting with flocks of a hundred plus birds.
Diet
The diet consists of fruits, insects, centipedes and bird eggs.
Breeding
The clutch consists of 1-3 white eggs which hatch after 40 days. The young become independant at around 80 days.
Vocalisation
Call: a bray, like a demented donkey.
