Now Cranes are not an unusual sight in winter in the south of Spain, and I had already seen very small groups of them flying around La Janda, but this week's encounter was absolutely unforgettable: a huge flock of over 1,500 birds gathering in a field. Together with the sighting of a Black Vulture it made for an unbelievable birding day. A few more images on my blog (link in profile). Cheers!
Well, its that time of year again, when Green Sand realises he's a fortnight behind schedule for posting his 'That Was The Year That Was' retrospection. The levels of disorganisation...... A good friend of mine, who has suffered listening to me going on about my birding year, suggested that when doing my summary I try to include the best bird I've seen. I've thought about this, and decided not only to do that but also include best days, worst days, etc. The peaks and troughs of yet another sine wave of a birding year. Looking back, I remember realising in January that this was looking like being a year of hard work. My carefully laid plans, hopes and amibitions for the start of the new birding year fell somewhat by the wayside due...

https://stonefactionbirding2014.blogspot.com/2023/12/1185-morning-and-afternoon-21223.html New blog-post. Last Saturday's rather unexpected snow meant a 2-part day - heading out in the morning as it began to snow, then revisiting the same sites again in the afternoon when the snow had stopped.
Ever had the feeling that nothing interesting was going to show up during a birding trip? It rarely happens to me, but last Saturday was one of those days. What seemed to be a dull excursion ended up being a pleasant afternoon, just by changing location. Quite easy in the south of Spain with all those different habitats close to one another. You can find the trip report and more photos on our blog (link in our profile). Cheers!
https://stonefactionbirding2014.blogspot.com/2023/12/1183-parks-and-ponds-251123.html New blog-post. Failure to get out of bed when the alarm went off, meant a later start. I stayed within a mile of home for 3 hours and managed a rather surprising selection of species....
