No sigh of Golden Orioles

I was in France last weekend.... Never seen so many Golden Orioles! I'd say between 20 and 30 around our property alone. Lots if Nightingales too.

Both still missing on my CH list.

I sometimes hear Orioles early in the summer on Kaferberg and Honggerberg but the only “reliable” place I know for them is in the forests near Bachenbulacheralmend at the N end of the Flughafen ZRH runways / the plane viewing area/cafe.

For Nightingales, the forest patches and hedgerows at Bachenbulacheralmend are also good all summer. I don’t know anywhere reliable for them closer to town.

Plenty of both around Geneva, a person doing a count of Nightingales around one site noted 40 singing males. There are singing Golden Orioles in most of the woods around here with tall trees. The Bee-eaters are present in force now as well. We also had an influx of birders from the Zurich area over the long weekend maybe needing to add some of these to their Swiss lists!

Lol..I know..need them on my Swiss list!
The Ballions Crake is still there!
Other gems seen include
  • Red Knot at Hagneckdelta
  • Collard Flycatcher at Salavaux
  • Black Vulture at Nendaz (my photos from Mallorca)
  • Montagus Harrier in several places including Riehen in Basel Land!

Bird of the day….Icterine Warbler.
The squeeky toy bird..what a song.
Of course I dipped on the one seen recently at Sempachsee.
Seen also in Solothun and Zurich regions

Some nice birds reported despite the wet weather:
  • Little Terns at FR, VD
  • Rollers at TI
  • Slender Billed Gulls at VD
  • Short toed Eagle at BE
Hopefully weather better tomorrow.

A great day out in Klingnauersee with friends.
Some 70 species seen or heard including Black tailed Godwit, Common Terns, Golden Orioles, Cuckoos, Pintail, Black Kites, Little Bitterns, Reed Warblers etc etc.
Just leaving when a Hobby swept passed us chasing dragonflies.
Weather was fine…
Just get out there!

I hope to get out again starting next week, my mission this summer is to finally see a Rock Partridge. I’d also like to get to Kaltbrunnerried soon and see if I can find the Icterine Warblers there, I’ve only ever seen a handful of them and always migrants or while looking for other birds so haven’t really spent time with them.

My best places for Rock Partridges are in the Wallis…Above Leuk ( up from the Radar Station), and Arolla along river bed towards the glacier, opposite the water pumping station, and last in Graubunden above Vals.
If you need further info I try to send maps.
