Identification

16-19cm
Sooty olive upperparts and head, rufous rump, brown back and wings, dark reddish brown tail, bright yellow moustache stripes on sides of throat. Sexes alike
Juvenile resembles adult, but more dingy brown, no moustache.

Distribution

Africa:
Western Africa: found in Mauritania, Senegal, Senegal, Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola
Eastern Africa: Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania
African Islands: Gulf of Guinea Islands, Bioko (Fernando Po)

Taxonomy

Subspecies^[1]

• Senegal to south-western Nigeria

• A. l. latirostris:

• Southern Nigeria to northern Angola, eastern Zaire, Kenya and Tanzania; Bioko

Habitat

Dry and moist lowland forests, moist montanes, and moist shrubland.

Behaviour

Solitary.

Diet

The diet includes fruits, berries, molluscs, woodlice, spiders, frogs, and geckos.

Breeding

When breeding the males gather and sing at lek sites; females gather at leks and choose male. 1-4 eggs are laid and incubated by female only for 12–14 days. Outside of leks, both care for young.
