Identification

aka Bank Swallow. L 12�13 cm. Breeds colonially in vertical sandy or earth banks, e.g. in gravel-pits and river banks, where nest is excavated (often a good metre horizontally into the earth). Rather tied to water, often seen in numbers hunting insects in low flight over lakes and rivers. Summer visitor to Britain & Ireland (Mar�Oct), winters in tropical W Africa. Prior to and during migration roosts communally in large reedbeds
