Identification
15–17 cm. Strong white supercilium and weaker crown stripe, patterned brown back and wings, streaked underparts, and a diagnostic - but often difficult to see - yellow throat-spot.
Distribution
Western north Africa, Spain, and Portugal across southern Europe and through central Asia.
Taxonomy
Seven or sometimes eight subspecies are recognized: petronia (madeirensis), barbara, puteicola, exigua, kirhizica, intermedia, and brevirostris.
Habitat
Mountains and rocky areas.
Behaviour
It nests in crevices in rocks or walls, laying 3–7 eggs.
Its diet includes mainly seeds with some insects.
