Western Africa: found in Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea.

Subspecies
There are 2 subspecies[1]:
- M. s. scutatus:
- Sierra Leone to Ghana and Benin
- M. s. scutopartitus:
Habitat
Rainforest, gallery forest, and old secondary growth.
Behaviour
Breeding
The nest is usually suspended from a palm frond, the entrance is via a long tube which is flared at the end.
