Spermophaga ruficapilla has two subspecies:[1]

  • S. r. ruficapilla
  • Southern Sudan to Uganda, western Kenya, western Tanzania and north-western Angola
  • S. r. cana
  • North-eastern Tanzania (Usambara Mountains)
