Ptilinopus pelewensis

Identification

23cm. Sexually monomorphic. 'Imperial' purple forehead and centre of crown. Sides of crown and nape grey, washed green. Upperparts bright moss green. Sides of head and neck as nape. Chin, throat and breast soft grey, feathers in centre of breast bifurcated with scarlet bases making the area look like it has sculptured red 'V's on it. Lower breast / upper belly bright orange, lower belly / vent yellowish green. Undertail coverts bright orange. Wings moss green, tail dark green with broad yellow tip.

Juveniles :- overall bright moss green with very pale grey chinn and throat, yellowish was to breast. Rest of underparts 'grubby' yellow.

Bare parts :- Bill yellowish grey, Legas blackish brown, eye yellow.

Voice :- Long drawn out hoot, irregular to start then evens out in rhythm while slowing down and fading out. Heard throughout the day and night.

Palau Common on all islands.
