Pycnonotus plumosus

Includes Ashy-fronted Bulbul

Identification

20 cm.
Upper parts dull brown with strong olive wash on wings and tail. Underparts pale dull brown; undertail coverts buff brown; indistinct streaking on ear coverts whitish; iris reddish (brown in juveniles.)

Distribution

Tenasserim Myanmar, Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas and Palawan Philippines.

Subspecies[1]

There are 8 subspecies:

  • P. p. plumosus: Malay Peninsula, Riau Archaepelago, eastern Sumatra and Java
  • P. p. porphyreus: Western Sumatra, Nias, Batu, Banyak and Mentawi islands
  • P. p. billitonis: Western and southern Borneo and Belitung Island
  • P. p. hutzi: Northern and eastern Borneo
  • P. p. chiroplethis: Anambas Islands (South China Sea)
  • P. p. hachisukae: Banggai and adjacent islands off north-eastern Borneo; Cagayan Sulu
  • P. p. cinereifrons: South-western Philippines (Palawan, Culion and Busuanga)
  • P. p. sibergi: Bawean Island (Java Sea)

The subspecies P. p. cinereifrons has been proposed for elevation to full species Ashy-fronted Bulbul P. cinereifrons[2]

Habitat

Forests, forest edges, coastal scrub and plantations.

Behaviour

Usually seen singly or in pairs. Often joining other bulbuls in fruiting trees and scrubs.

Diet

Diet includes fruit.
