Identification
Notice the yellow forehead of the male.
Distribution
Australia, mostly south of tropic of capricorn. Sedentary or locally nomadic.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species according to some authorities, others include subspecies orientalis and dulciei.
Habitat
Arid woodland, often near water such as riverbeds.
Behaviour
Diet includes mainly seeds but also fruits, blossoms, and flower buds, and various plant and vegetable matter. Insects and insect larvae are also consumed.
4 - 6 eggs are laid and incubated for about 19 days. After 4 - 5 weeks the young fledge and are independent after approx. another 2 - 3 weeks.
