Melocichla mentalis

Identification

Length 18-19 cm. A large, plain warbler with a dark, broad, rounded tail. It has a black malar stripe and unstreaked breast and backand.

Distribution

Tropical Africa

Taxonomy

Melocichla mentalis has five subspecies:[1]

  • M. m. mentalis
  • Senegambia to Gabon, southern Zaire, Angola, Zambia and northern Malawi
  • M. m. amauroura
  • Southern Sudan to south-western Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia
  • M. m. orientalis
  • Eastern Kenya to southern Tanzania, southern Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique
  • M. m. incana
  • North-eastern Tanzania
  • M. m. luangwae
  • Zambia

Habitat

Long, rank grass adjacent to forest.
