Lophura erythrophthalma

Identification

Male 47-51cm

  • Glossy purple-blue black
  • Vermiculated white above and on sides of breast
  • Red facial wattles
  • Deep red rump
  • Caramel, short tail

Female 42-44cm

  • Glossy dark purple/green-blue black
  • Brown head
  • Buff throat
  • Dark tail

Distribution

Malaya, Sumatra and Borneo.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

  • L. e. erythrophthalma - Malay Peninsula and Sumatra
  • L. e. pyronota - n Borneo

Habitat

Lowland jungles.

Behaviour

The diet includes termites, ticks, berries,and grubs. 3-6 eggs are laid and are incubated for 24 days.
