Identification

36-38 cm in length. Black, white wing patch and grey, beak. Males - crimson head and crest. Females have a mainly black head, red near the base of the bill.

Distribution

Southern half of Chile and southern Andean Argentina.

Taxonomy

Monotypic

Habitat

Forests, mostly in areas with mountains and foothills.

Behaviour

Diet includes grubs and adult beetles.

They dig a nest cavity 5-15m above the ground, and 1-4 eggs are laid.
