Asio otus

This photo is of the N. American subspecies (wilsonianus) of this widespread owl.

Identification

Medium sized owl, orange face. Two long 'ears' which give it its name.

Distribution

Europe, Asia and North America

Taxonomy

There are four recognised subspecies.


Habitat

Deciduous, mixed and coniferous woodland and forest

Behaviour

Nocturnal and crepuscular.

Diet is mainly voles.

It nests in old nest of other birds.
